Bio

MURI Research:
Electromagnetic wave propagation in photonic crystals.
Area of expertise includes:

  • Wave propagation in periodic and random media.
  • Theory of linear and nonlinear photonic crystals.
  • Spectral theory of dispersive and dissipative dielectric and other media.
  • Nonlinear Maxwell and Schrodinger equations.
  • Random number generation.

Prof. Figotin is an author and coauthor of 54 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and a monograph on the spectral theory of random and almost periodic Schrodinger operators.. He is also a co-inventor in four US patents. The most important scientific results directly related to the MURI project include the discovery of the phenomenon of electromagnetic unidirectionality in magnetic photonic crystals, as well as theoretical prediction of the frozen mode regime. These results were obtained in collaboration with Dr. Ilya Vitebskiy. Nonlinear effects in photonic crystals including nonlinear wave interaction is another important direction of the research he conducts together with Dr. Anatoli Babine.

Alexander Figotin got his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1980, Tashkent State University, USSR.
