Design Methods

At the heart of this effort is the non-parametric design of composite
materials. In this context, two issues are being addressed. First, a general
mathematical framework will be developed to conduct rigorous analysis of
composite materials without any geometric or material restrictions. Second, a
versatile design method will be pursued for the best geometric configuration
and material composition. This research will address these two issues by
integrating various material models (such as HDM with UD photonic crystals)
into structural topology optimization and couple these with fast and rigorous
simulations for non-parametric design leading to novel composite material
microstructures.
